Mac OS has a built-in screenshot taking feature and taking a screenshot is very easy. I take a lot of screenshots on my Mac. Some of them can be seen here on this website. Because this site, macreports, has a lot of macOS and iOS tutorials and I have written a lot of troubleshooting articles showing you what’s on the screens of my devices.

But that Print Screen key is not present on Macs, which can leave you wondering how to do a print screen on a Macbook. Fortunately this is something that you can do on the computer using the default capabilities of the operating system, although the method for doing so is slightly different from the method that you would use in Windows. Others use the F14 key as Print Screen. Still others technically have a “function” key but don’t label it as such, instead opting for descriptions such as “Alt” or using a special graphic. The good news is that we have yet to encounter a keyboard that can’t get Apple’s Print Screen key mapping working on a Mac.

You may take a lot of them too. Because this can very useful if you want to show someone (e.g., your friend etc) what’s on your desktop.

So, how can you take a screenshot on a Mac?

Mac OS’s screenshot utility makes it very easy to capture your screen. You can capture your whole screen (hold down Shift-Command (⌘)-3) or some part of it (hold down Shift-Command (⌘)-4 then drag your cursor).

Where are my screenshots?

By default, the screenshot you take is saved to your desktop whenever you press the keys above. You will hear a camera shutter sound effect. That means that you just took a screenshot. The file won’t open automatically. Your screenshot will be saved as a PNG file. The name of the screenshot will be Screen Shot date at time.png (e.g., Screen Shot 2017-03-20 at 7.16.41 PM.png). Of course, you can easily change this setting. You can, in fact, save it anywhere.

Terminal

You can also take screenshots using the command line in macOS. Here is how:

  • Open the Terminal app
  • Enter the following command: screencapture ~/Desktop/macreports.jpg and press enter.
  • This command will create a screenshot named macreports.jpg and it will be saved to your desktop
  • Other commands:
  • screencapture -c (clipboard screenshot)
  • man screencapture (for help)
  • screencapture -T 10 macreports.jpg (t=seconds, timer)

How to Save a Picture of Your Screen on a Mac

The steps in this article were performed on a MacBook Air running the MacOS version of the operating system. When you print screen on a Mac using the method described below, the screenshot image will be saved as a .png file on your Mac’s desktop.

Step 1: Set up your Mac’s screen so that the information that you want to capture in the screenshot is visible. You can click the yellow circle at the top-left corner of any windows that you don’t want to be visible in the screenshot. This will minimize the window. Alternatively you can click the red circle to close the window.

Step 2: Simultaneously press the command + shift + 3 keys on your keyboard.

Step 3: Locate your screenshot on your desktop. Your Mac will automatically give the screenshot a filename similar to Screen Shot 2017-03-24 at 11.29.11 AM, but will replace the date and time with the information corresponding to when you took the screenshot on your own computer. Note that you can click on that filename and delete it or edit it to suit your own needs.
